Responsible for the treatment of waste produced by around 1 million inhabitants, Lipor consulted with BI4ALL in order to implement a Business Intelligence and Analytics solution to assist in the analysis and reporting of their data.

The company

Lipor is the entity responsible for the management, valorisation and treatment of urban solid waste produced by the eight municipalities of the Oporto area. Every year, Lipor treats about 500 thousand tons of urban waste, produced by about 1 million inhabitants. Thus, the company's objective was to design, adopt and implement sustainable waste management solutions, taking into account the needs of its Partners and Communities.


Lipor initially had a number of operational and financial indicators that needed to be calculated in a systematic and regular method, during the shortest possible time and effort. In this way, the company needed to implement an analysis and reporting solution that would allow it to improve the management information presented internally in quality and quantity.
The project focused on weighing information, and its main objective was to integrate data from a set of tables from the weighing source systems (PSG) and the organic valorisation center (CRM) into a single repository.


With the implementation of this system, Lipor was able to obtain, more quickly and automatically, the analysis of the different metrics. However, the greatest benefit was to be able to analyse and realize in what way the business is being conducted. It should be noted that prior to this implementation, technicians spent more than 70% of their time producing all the information and 30% analysing it. Today, after the implementation of the Business Intelligence solution, users have focused on analysing the data, which is where they can add significant value to the company.


During the integration stage of the files in the Central Repository, the data was cleaned, transformed and enriched with information and business rules that did not exist in the source. Business metadata was also developed in the assessment tool that allowed the users to execute user-friendly and predefined reports or ad-hoc queries without being aware of the underlying data model or technical language.
Since these systems are oriented to business concepts, they will allow their users to be independent and autonomous in the manipulation of the information contained in the repository. This solution was based on a solid foundation, to allow its future evolution to a global decision support solution.
