Human Resources analysis with PivotViewer

"Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible." - Saint Francis of Assisi
With the birth of the human resources department in mid-June of 2013, BI4ALL faced a challenge of providing the latest internal department with the same solutions that have been providing it’s clients for years.
Being the Microsoft Portuguese bi partner of the year, choosing the technology was a no brainer. The demand was simple, a cool, new, fresh and intuitive data visualization solution, this keyword were the motto for the crusade of choosing the data tool.
Our research led us to a powerful data visualization tool, the PivotViewer. The Microsoft Silverlight data visualization solution soon proved to be the right choice. It’s a easy to use and fun to interact solution that leverages Deep Zoom, enabling the full display of high-resolution content (in this case our lovely employees) without long loads times, featuring cool animations and natural transitions providing the perfect setting for browsing throw the data.
The data available featured employee information such as age, gender, career level, seniority and a technology profile of each employee. It was fun to peak Andro’s age, “the always young partner” that only has 34 years old, i repeat 34!! Which made us doubt the level of data quality :)
With the source data in our hands we started the design of the multidimensional star schema relational database. Area, Position, Office, Employee were defined as dimensions, all related in the Employee fact table that records all profile changes associated with the employees.
Duo to a different granularity level another fact table was created storaging the levels of experience of each employee throw out BI4ALL range of the technology and framework know how. Ranging from beginner to specialist all employees rated their knowledge providing a valuable information for the human resources department.
Using the same structure and integration data process, as in Bi4all Legal Solution developed for one of our clients, our BI4ALL human resources PivotViewer came to live.

From the initial demand only one requisite wasn’t met, checking the levels of experience of each employee throw-out the frameworks and technologies. Being a column oriented data analyzer the data visualization on PivotViewer only allows displaying information with just one dimension context. You can filter all dimensions sets that you want but only can visualize the data one dimension at a time. This demand will only be fulfil with new application developments.
Being a fairly unknown technology in BI4ALL we fill that its application and market is huge, and certainly will be used in future bi4all solutions mainly because of its simplicity and spectacular look and fill.
By the way our internal client was thrilled!
